Wednesday Weigh-In

I was having kind of a bad day today. I have to prep a sermon for this weekend (I’m still waiting for the epiphany to hit me), I’m not feeling good, and I am still at 220 lbs. Then I look in my mail and my friend sent me this:

These are Leonards Malasadas. These are the best thing that you will ever eat…if you are into the best desserts EVER!!! This is a mix between a doughnut and creamy coconut goodness. This is an extra 2 lbs added to my butt, but I don’t care. Thank you Alan and Audrey. You guys rocked my world.

I’ll get serious about my workout tomorrow. I swear.

Roby Duke

As I get older, more people are dying around me. One of my favorite worship leaders/musicians/artists/guitarists died last month. His name is Roby Duke. I found out while I was on a Worship Forum last night. I’ve seen this guy at the Christian Musicians Summit twice. I fell in love with his heart for God, his love for guitar, and his amazing way of leading people in worship. Roby was also very funny. He spoke with the demeanor of a delta blues man who wasn’t going to put up with anything, but was always ready to hug people who he knew and loved.

I didn’t know Roby personally. In fact, he couldn’t have picked me out of a line up. But I sat inthe front row of every class that he taught and I watched and listened to his advice in music, guitar, and life, just trying to catch a glimpse of who he is. I am saddened by the death of this man. He will be missed.

This is a video of him playing at the Music Summit. I didn’t hum because I was too busy listening to him and watching him.

Confessions of the Brown Kid

Swear on a stack of Bibles:

-I am the guy who speeds up in my car when I see somebody walking by a puddle.

-I listen to Phil Collins and love it.

-I cleanse, tone, and moisturize my face at night and in the morning.

-I laugh when I see kids fall. When they cry, I make sure they are okay and then I laugh.

-I am the devil on some peoples shoulder. What I mean is I put the idea in someone’s head and tell them that it would be “cool” if they did it. I do this because I want to see how funny it really is.

-I get upset and jealous when they become “hilarious” because they actually did it.

-I sign up on Oprah’s website for contests to be on her “Favorite Things” episode.

Lord forgive me.

Some Good Comes in from the Cold

January and February are the worst months for me. I hate the cold, and I know that I’m not meant to be in it. Right now it is 15-25 degrees outside (-15 degrees celcius). I hate it. I’m grumpier and my skin dries out.

…but sometimes some cool things come out of the things that you hate the most. I find that sometimes when it is cold you see some of the most amazing sunsets and aftermaths. I took this picture from my front porch.

Gotta try to polish that turd somehow.

I Have a Dream

I got into ministry because I am a dreamer. I dreamed of helping people, all people, who were willing to accept help. I dream of people seeing Jesus in a new and wonderful way when they step into a church. Dr. King told us that he had seen the promised land. I remember when I saw the promised land. It was when I began to realize that Christianity is beyond me. The promised land was shown when I began to truly see what “the last shall be first” truly could mean.

I still dream of helping people. If I wasn’t working in ministry, I would be working in a Non-Prof or Social organization of somekind. My vision of the promised land has changed incredibly in that time also. Where I once thought that heaven looked like my church, I now envision a heaven filled with the undesirables, the homeless and the awful. I dream of worshipping with Jesus and the undesirables. This is what I dream of showing people.

Sometimes I wonder if ministry is simply a job description. As if people have lost the dream and now are focused on the church rather than people. I still dream. Maybe I’m a silly heart. I don’t know.

Still Dreaming

Friday Mix-Tape

here are some of the songs I am listening to this morning as I clean my house:

Working for the Weekend – Loverboy. How do you not kick off the weekend with this song? No, I’m asking you seriously. Look into my eyes and you will know that this song is awesome.

White Daisies Passing – Rocky Votolato. Probably one of the purest songs I’ve ever heard. Beautiful melody and harmonies. loveit.

Give it To Me Baby – Rick James. This is the party track.

When it’s Good – Ben Harper. I am really attracted to the “stomp and clap” track on this song. very delta blues sounding.

Good Life – Kanye West. First he took the sample from one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs, “PYT”, and then Kanye makes it into this little gem with T-Pain.

Lit Up – BuckCherry. A song about a cocaine binge. Rock and Roll at its…finest?

As – Stevie Wonder. “Songs in the Key of Life” is probably one of my favorite albums. I love it. This is one of my favorite songs of the album.

The Cowboy Song – Thin Lizzy. I got into Thin Lizzy through listening to Metallica. Not when they did “Whiskey in the Jar – O”, but in the early nineties when I read that they took all of thier harmony guitar parts from Thin Lizzy. If you are a Metallica fan, this makes sense.

Stars – David Crowder Band. Simple country riff. Simple melody. I really love this song.

I Will Follow You Into the Dark – Death Cab For Cutie. I am obsessed with this song. What an amazing love song. Love it, love it, love…it.

What’s Your Mix?
