We had some people from the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) come and interview us today for a video to show their leaders of their denomination about Roosevelt Community Church and how God is moving through local missions here in our neighborhood. It was a pleasant experience because I was able to hear stories from different people in our congregation of why they come to RCC and why they love it.
For me, it wasn’t about a guy shooting a video and documenting God’s achievments at RCC. As a worship director, my part was easy as all I had to talk about was the worship life at RCC and different ways we worship (ie: organic devotional journals, Assets for Change board, Film for Thought, etc.). The most amazing thing for me though, was to hear stories of actual liturgy – a work done by the people. Hearing stories of people doing church in new and different ways and their willingness to have God use them only to feel blessed by Him was pretty incredible.
God is moving RCC and soon Northwest Community Church to help us bring neighbor back to the hood. That is what we are about, we are chasing the darkness. I am proud to be a part of it.
Well, my wife was sick and then I got sick. You can tell where I am going with this. I didn’t get to the gym as much as I wanted to (only 3 times), but I did keep a semi healthy eating regimine. So here is how it went down:
So I lost 2 lbs and a half an inch on my chest and waist. It was really hard this week because I really wanted to eat bad because I was sick. My wife pesters me by telling me, “now you have all of those people on your blog who are going to keep you accountable.” Thanks honey. Anyways, what I did different this week was I really tried to keep an eye on what I ate and drank. Basically I looked at what I was putting into my mouth before I put it in there. I need to start an eating journal. That’s what I want to do. That would probably get it going.
How are you doing this week?
***Here are more people who are involved in the NMFAPIMWLC. Check out their progress!
Have you seen this movie? It’s a Documentary following Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir as they tour the nation looking to stop Christmas Consumerism amongst americans. It’s on the Netflix Instant Watch but you can also put it into your queue. I think I saw Jim Wallis is in this movie also. Definitely a Film for Thought movie at Roosevelt Community Church toward the end of the year! Check out the trailer below. If you saw it, what did you think?
Me: I loved it. It was a great and interesting look into american consumerism with a comedic twist. I never really figured out if the reverend or anybody was really “christian”. Somebody in the movie described it as being involved in activism in a fun and different way. Watch as the group takes their message across the country with a stop at Walmart Headquarters to excercise demons and also takes their message to the Mall of America and Disneyland. If you see this movie, check out Walmart: the High Price of Low Cost also.
If there was an angel and a devil on your shoulder, think of me as the devil. The Lost Finale is on Thursday and this was posted on a Lost nerd site called darkufo.blogspot.com. This is a spoiler that somebody “on the inside” sent to them and they were asked by abc/disney to pull off of their site. It may not be accurate…or it may be. Either way, if you are a lost fan, you can watch the spoiler below – or not.
*cue Brown kid wringing his hands while laughing an evil laugh*
People in Bellingham dress alike. It’s really strange actually. Having grown up in this area for the longest time, I’ve seen clothing trends come and go. One of my favorites was about 10 years ago when everybody wore a Western Washington University sweatshirt (WWU), jeans, birkenstocks, and a nalgene bottle in tow.
These days, the trend has slowly evolved. We have added trendy eye wear to the mix (think rob bell type of glasses that sometimes I suspect aren’t always perscription), changed the sweatshirt to a Boundary Bay Brewing “Save the Ales” hoody, changed the birkenstocks to flip flops, made the jeans a low rise baggy pair that shows off your butt crack, and kept the nalgene. *BAM* You can fit in in Bellingham. You can also fit in if you wear anything from REI or if you are “older” and wear outerwear from the “life is good” wear line.
Do I fit in here in Bellingham? Kind of. First, I do wear flip flops – I call them slippers – but I’ve worn them since I was a little guy, so I have a limited shelf life here. Second, all anybody can buy these days are low rise jeans that show off our coin slots. Third, Nalgene? Check! The only thing that I refuse to do is wear a Save the Ales Sweatshirt. I love Boundary Bay’s Beer (emphasis on love), but I will not conform to you Bellingham.
My question is this: is there a “uniform” in the area you live in, or does this only happen in Bellingham?
Today I spent my day off from Starbucks working from home for my other job at Roosevelt Community Church. I have an intern coming in this summer, and so I am preparing for that by reading and trying to crunch down what I do exactly. I’m finding it hard because I don’t “go” to work. Sometimes I spend most of the day in my pajamas.
I also spent the day working with my Fruity Loops program. I wrote a couple of beats and actually wrote a song that sounds a lot like Prince (Beat and Rhythms not voice). I was really excited about that.
I came out of everything at about…4:30 in the afternoon. Nothing else got done. My wife came home and I was scared that she might be angry because nothing was cleaned or picked up. I heard in my head, “what did you do today”. Sometimes telling her that I read and wrote music doesn’t always work, but today it did. I had fun today. It was definitely a surprising day off.
What did you do today? Do you have any big plans for the holiday weekend? I am going to be walking in the annual Ski to Sea Parade with the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association on Saturday. Also, here in bellingham, gas is at $4.00 a gallon. awesome.
Here we sit under the reign of newly crowned American Idol, David Cook. Shocked? A little. How cool to have the Canadian Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, playing? His face looked like a leather bag but his voice was still sweet as Maple Syrup.
This is the last post about the american idols that I’ll do. I simply wanted to show you the difference of the search references that led people to my blog today and yesterday. It is quite comical. As usual, I highlighted the ones that made me laugh the most.
Brent over at InWorship jumped on board with this and set out the weight loss challenge for fellow bloggers and people in ministry. I think that its funny how the most overweight people are working in either minstry or health care…two people who tell you that your body is a temple and how to take care of it.
So here we go! I, in typical Hawaiian fashion, have simply been continuing to gain weight and put this challenge off for later. Well, later started today. Here are the Brown Kid’s stats for you:
I’m 6′ 1″. I weigh 217 lbs. My chest 45″ and my waist is 42 1/2″. I would post a picture, but I don’t want to make the ladies stumble (that’s a joke).
So I see a pattern developing in myself that I seem to have a comfort zone of 215-220. I hope to get down to 205 before or by september-ish. It doesn’t help that I work at St. Arbucks and am surrounded by deliciousness of the “Reduced Fat” Strawberries and Cream Coffee Cake…and caramel Machiatos…and Grande Hazelnut and Vanilla Lattes…and strawberries and cream blended creams…and, oh who am I kidding, I want to put it all in my mouth because it’s all good. So here is what I am going to do. While I am working out and eating healthy, I will only drink black coffee and unsweetened black Iced teas. Also, no sweets until the cheat days. Yes, I said cheat days. It will be my day of free for all eating so I don’t go crazy.
All of you Archuleta fans have been so mean to me. You’ve all said how I’m jealous. You’ve told me that I’m a hater. You’ve even said that you were voting extra for David A. simply because of my posting. Because of you, this posting is the one that I’ve gotten the most hits on (even more than my own “about me” section). But here is the thing: As I lay trying to take a nap today, I watched “Ellen” as Simon Cowell said the exact same thing as I did in my original posting of David Archuleta Must Lose. He said that beyond the voice, David Archuleta doesn’t have any skills to be a pop star, even saying that “once you get beyond the ‘Golly, gee…” of the sentence, David has nothing”.
Now it comes down to tonight – the season finale for American Idol. I gloat in the fact that Simon and I are on track, but lament the fact that David Cook’s career may possibly turn for the worse if he defeats our friend David Archuleta. With that in mind, I leave all the fans of David Archuleta with these parting words: suck it.
I’ve been meaning to post on this for a while now. Why is it when I heard that somebody was protesting the new Starbucks cup’s image, the first thing that popped into my head was, “they must be christian”. I actually thought it was somebody from the midwest, but when I heard it was in San Diego I was actually surprised. Here is the pic in question…only now the logo comes with the mermaids hair covering her breasteses:
Maybe it’s because I live in the liberal northwest, or maybe because I work at St. Arbucks, but I don’t see anything wrong with the retro cups. I actually like them better myself. Why is it that we Christians seem to protest everything the most as compared to any other group? Gay Marriage? protest. Women in Church Leadership? protest. Offensive Coffee Cups? protest. Yet, we never really see christians protesting war and other forms of injustices.
