Friday Mix Tape: The Bellingham, WA. Edition

April 4, 2008

bellingham.jpg

This is the most exciting time of year for Bellingham. The Farmers Market is getting ready to open, Ski to Sea is just around the corner, and more and more people come out of their homes to see what spring is bringing. As you can see in the picture above, we Bellinghamsters call ourselves the City of Subdued Excitement. Locals love it and Imports who moved here and want to increase their property value hate it.

On Facebook, the Top 5 music in bellingham are 1. Jack Johnson 2. Coldplay 3. Sublime 4. Rock and 5. The Beatles. With this in mind, I went through my iTunes and found some songs that I would want to be listening to while walking downtown and visiting my friend Kelly at the Cheerful, longboarding around my neighborhood, or sharing six dollar six packs with my friends while talking about politics, religion, and music…because that is all we talk about in bellingham. So in honor of the City of Subdued Excitement, I give you the Bellingham Edition of the Friday Mixtape:

Dragonfly - Ziggy Marley
Burn One Down - Ben Harper
Soul Meets Body - Death Cab for Cutie
Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles
Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix
Young Folks - Peter, Bjorn, and John
Tiny Dancer - Ben Folds
Inaudible Melodies - Jack Johnson
Badfish - Sublime
Jamming - Bob Marley
Cold Shot - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Two Coins - Dispatch
Mustang Sally - Buddy Guy
Jail Break - Thin Lizzy
Lie in Our Graves - Dave Matthews Band
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
The Great Gig In The Sky - Pink Floyd
Island In The Sun - Weezer

What’s in YOUR mix today? If you are have lived, are living, or know Bellingham what did I miss?

Friday Mix-Tape: The “Dude Sweat” Edition.

March 28, 2008

svenlogg.jpg

Today I decided to go with what I like to call the “Dude Sweat” Mix. This is straight rock. This is the music you listen to while you are in the gym. You would listen to this mix before you punch someone in the face. This is music that is filled with testosterone and never lets up. A warning though, there is a repeat band in the mix – but it’s AC/DC so you should understand. With that being said, here is the Dude Sweat Mix for this Friday’s Mix Tape:

Them Bones – Alice in Chains

Thunderstruck – AC/DC

Lit Up - Buck Cherry

State of Love and Trust – Pearl Jam

Love Buzz – Nirvana

Cold Hard Bitch – JET

Shoot to Thrill – AC/DC

Paradise City – Guns n Roses

Guerilla Radio – Rage Against the Machine

Judith – A Perfect Circle

Deny – Default

Machine Head – Bush

Prison Sex – Tool

So, did I miss any? What would you add or take away from the Mix Tape?

Friday Mix Tape

February 15, 2008

svenlogg.jpg

Here is my Friday Mix Tape for this weekend. Lately I’ve been striving toward my goal of losing weight and so I’ve made this mix to pump me up. I like to work out to “angry” music but I like to balance it out with music that doesn’t make me hate my dad for not buying me those parachute pants. Here’s the mix for today:

Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution – AC/DC. Ever since I saw the Nike commercial, this song usually begins my workout.

Cold Hard Bitch – Jet. I wish Jet made another album like this first one. I love this album.

Superstition (live) – SRV. Stevie Ray Vaughan is good for any time. Including workouts!

Judith – A Perfect Circle. This is a song that makes me angry at my dad.

Love Buzz – Nirvana. This is one of my favorites from Nirvana.

Do the Evolution – Pearl Jam. From my favorite Pearl Jam CD. This song is absolute chaos.

Paradise City – Guns n’ Roses. Yes.

Times like this – Foo Fighters. The Foos will be on mixtapes for a long time to come. If not, they should be.

Ground on Down – Ben Harper. This song makes me want keep going.

Dig – Incubus. I just really love this song. My favorite Incubus song. Makes me keep running.

Anythings Possible – Johnny Lang. Good finisher song. Helps me remember that I can lose weight.

What songs help keep you going in the gym? In life?

Valentines Friday Mix Tape

February 8, 2008

**I’m hanging out with Cynthia tomorrow so I am posting this early. It is thursday but I want to hang out with my wife and not blog tomorrow.**

I know that it is next week, but in honor of Valentines day, I thought that I would do a friday mix tape for the lovers out there, but instead of a “music to make love to” mix I am doing the “break up” tape. This is for people who have been broken up with and are tired of it. This mix will go in the stages of the break up (Life sucks. why? what now? I don’t care. I really do).

Aint No Sunshine – Bill Withers. The Classic I need her in my life song. It hurts my heart listening to this song.

Return of the Mack – Mark Morrison. This is the song declaring that you are back on the market even though you are not ready to be.

99 Problems – Jay-Z. “If you’re having girl problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but a b@#ch aint one.”

Black – Pearl Jam. You are sad again. The lyric that gets you here is in the end when eddie sings, “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be the sun in somebody else’s sky but why can’t it be mine?” AAAHHHHH! kill me now.

Be without You – Mary J. Blige. How did this get in the mix? Oh yeah, she keeps talking about how she can’t be without her lover. **Mental note** Turn this one down when people are around.

White Daisy Passing – Rocky Votolato. This song is about memories and brings back so many of you and the one who dumped you.

Here’s a Quarter (call someone who cares) – Travis Tritt. Your mad again. He/She calls you even though they need their “space”.

Hey Joe – Jimi Hendrix. This song is a little extreme but you know how he feels to an extent. Not to the extent of murder but to the extent of being angry.

Never again – Kelly Clarkson. It was either this or anything off of Alanis Morrisettes “Jagged Little Pill” CD.

Irreplaceable – Beyonce. You begin realizing that there are others out there. “I can have another you in a minute, matter of fact he’ll be here in a minute…baby.”

Used to Love You – John Legend. Your questioning yourself again. What could have I done to make it better?

Love song for no one – John Mayer. Your looking at the market and wondering how to reconnect. How do you put yourself out ther again? “I’m tired of being alone. So hurry up and get here”.

No Woman, No Cry – Bob Marley. This has to be on any idiots mix of lovers lament. It’s cliche and it’s obvious. But still it speaks to every guy’s soft side.

Best of You – Foo Fighters. No one will get the best of you. You’ll make sure of it. This one pumps you up before you go out clubbing.

There’s no home for you here – The White Stripes. You’re trying to make steps away from the girl/guy. Forget about them.

Honorable Mention: Babe, I’m Going to Leave You – Led Zeppelin. Matt told me a story about a friend who dumped his girlfriend to this song. Classic. Since this is a dumping song, then it doesn’t make the list.

What are some songs that you have listened to or would listen to while having your heart ripped out and handed back to you with a smile?

Friday Mix Tape

February 1, 2008

untitiled.jpg

These are a few of the songs from my Itunes play list to help kick off the weekend:

Hella Good – No Doubt. I gotta start the weekend off right!

Shoot to Thrill – AC/DC. Probably one of my favorite AC/DC songs. Great guitar riff (of course), oh to be young again.cliche rock and roll lyrics, and it was featured in Talladega nights.

Rehab – Amy Winehouse. Please let the rehab take Amy Winehouse! Very talented singer. Think Lauryn Hill with a bad drinking/drug problem that she’s okay with.

Dancing with Myself – Billy Idol. This song makes me laugh. SWEAT! SWEAT! SWEAT! SWEAT! SWEAT!

It’s Only Love – Bryan Adams and Tina Turner. I just love the guitar riff in the beginning and Tina Turner’s vocals.

De Camino A La Vereda – Buena Vista Social Club. I don’t know what they are saying, but this whole album gets me ready for warm weather to show up. Come soon summer time!!!

Close to Me – The Cure. I heart Robert Smith.

Hold My Hand – Hootie and the Blowfish. You own this album. If not, you did. If not, you at least liked this song at one point in time. It’s a good song. No really, it is.

Wake Up Call – Maroon 5. I love this song. it’s a sad one though. poor adam levine. now he’s a murderer.

Take me with U - Prince. Yes. I will take you with me Prince.

Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland Illinois – Sufjan Stevens. I love this song. To me it’s one of those songs where you can “feel” the emotions of the song.

what’s in your mix?

Friday Mix-Tape

January 18, 2008

untitiled.jpg

here are some of the songs I am listening to this morning as I clean my house:

Working for the Weekend – Loverboy. How do you not kick off the weekend with this song? No, I’m asking you seriously. Look into my eyes and you will know that this song is awesome.

White Daisies Passing – Rocky Votolato. Probably one of the purest songs I’ve ever heard. Beautiful melody and harmonies. loveit.

Give it To Me Baby – Rick James. This is the party track.

When it’s Good – Ben Harper. I am really attracted to the “stomp and clap” track on this song. very delta blues sounding.

Good Life – Kanye West. First he took the sample from one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs, “PYT”, and then Kanye makes it into this little gem with T-Pain.

Lit Up – BuckCherry. A song about a cocaine binge. Rock and Roll at its…finest?

As – Stevie Wonder. “Songs in the Key of Life” is probably one of my favorite albums. I love it. This is one of my favorite songs of the album.

The Cowboy Song – Thin Lizzy. I got into Thin Lizzy through listening to Metallica. Not when they did “Whiskey in the Jar – O”, but in the early nineties when I read that they took all of thier harmony guitar parts from Thin Lizzy. If you are a Metallica fan, this makes sense.

Stars – David Crowder Band. Simple country riff. Simple melody. I really love this song.

I Will Follow You Into the Dark – Death Cab For Cutie. I am obsessed with this song. What an amazing love song. Love it, love it, love…it.

What’s Your Mix?
