…even when he was young.

Classic Matt McConaughey line. Today I went to the doctor for a check up and I began realizing all of these signs of getting older. Here are a few that I’ve compiled out of my brain for all of us.
You know you’re getting older when:
* You go to the doctor every year and they tell you to “cut back on the salt and excercise more”…every year.
* You “go for a jog” and you’re sore for the rest of the week
* You have to look up words or phrases on UrbanDictionary.com because you don’t know what something you overheard a kid in the mall said means.
* Date night turns into Lowe’s and Costco Dogs.
* You have hairs growing out of your ears and nose, and even your eyebrow hairs are getting longer.
* You grow random gray hairs.
* The movies you watch are “smarter” which really means they are boring.
* You begin to worry if people think that you are the “crazy cat person”.
* Some music becomes too loud or just plain noise and you become the one that kids say just don’t get it.
* If you don’t have kids, you become uncle or auntie.
* If you have kids, you become Mr. or Ms/Mrs. “name of parent of the kid that your kid is playing with” or Your kids name’s Mommy or Daddy.
* You use possesive ways to describe people (i.e. My Lawyer, My accountant, My kids, etc).
* You don’t go out past 10 p.m. because you are too tired.
* If you are out past 10 p.m you go directly home because you are too tired.
* You get excited to go to a show because you haven’t been out in a while, but you are even more pumped because the show is all ages and should be done early.
* You get pissed off when you find out that the show is going to be going late.
* For women, your purses and underwear get bigger as you grow older.
* For men, your underwear grow as many holes in them as you have been living out of your mom’s house…same wallet that you’ve had since then also.
* Clothes you wore in Middle and High School are coming back in style.
* You say something to somebody and follow it up with, “Oh my gosh, I just sounded like my mother”.
* Kids wear shirts of bands that you liked in high school, but usually can’t name a single song or album by that band.
* You research things before you buy them.
* You begin to drink wine because it is a “healthier choice”.
These are just a few of the ones I came up with. What did I miss?

1. Death Cab for Cutie’s New CD – Narrow Stairs I just really love the story telling in the lyrics. Songs about love, stalking, and other parts of disfuntional relationships. Great fun.
2. Wayne Park Wayne spoke at RCC yesterday. It was our first time meeting face to face. I will say this about him preaching yesterday: He brought it. No, I mean, HE BROUGHT IT. Wayne spoke on the idea of the Feeding of the 5,000 and the revolutionary thought behind this. He went into this a little more in depth on his blog. You should click on the link, visit him, comment, and tell him hello. Do it. Do it now. 3-2-1 Go. Now. Do it now.
3. Asbo Jesus This site is awesome. Maybe it’s my sarcasm. Maybe it’s my dry look on things that matter to me, such as the church. But this site shines a light on a lot of things that I think about and really seems to speak to me.
4. Rocky Votolato He played at Boundary Bay Brewery this past weekend. It was awesome. He has one of those voices that move you. Kind of like Van Morrison or Amos Lee. These kind of voices take you places. Here’s a video of Rocky singing “Portland is Leaving”.
5. King of Kong: Fist Full of Quarters This is a look at a guy who gets laid off and decides to try to break the World Record of Donkey Kong. It’s is a look at the seedy underbelly of gaming. It is a true story with a good guy vs. bad guy. It is just plain awesome. If you have Netflix, it’s on the instant watch.
6. Netlix Instant Watch They have movies that you can watch as you wait for your other movies to come. The Indie/documentary genre’s are good, but generally the comedy’s only have straight to DVD gratuitous boob comedy’s. boo. But they also have stand up comedy shows. Yay! They also have Magnum PI in the television genre. Double Yay! They also have The American Office on there. Triple Yay!
7. My Plan for World Domination. In about a month, I will unveil my idea of how I will take over the world.

Have you seen this movie? It’s a Documentary following Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir as they tour the nation looking to stop Christmas Consumerism amongst americans. It’s on the Netflix Instant Watch but you can also put it into your queue. I think I saw Jim Wallis is in this movie also. Definitely a Film for Thought movie at Roosevelt Community Church toward the end of the year! Check out the trailer below. If you saw it, what did you think?
Me: I loved it. It was a great and interesting look into american consumerism with a comedic twist. I never really figured out if the reverend or anybody was really “christian”. Somebody in the movie described it as being involved in activism in a fun and different way. Watch as the group takes their message across the country with a stop at Walmart Headquarters to excercise demons and also takes their message to the Mall of America and Disneyland. If you see this movie, check out Walmart: the High Price of Low Cost also.

I’ve been meaning to talk about this movie, the Namesake, for a while (below is the trailer). I saw it a few weeks back, netflixing it on the whim, and I was not disappointed. This movie is about second generation families. It shows the dysfunction that forms between parents from the “old country” and their children who are raised in American Pop Culture and the importance of finding your identity and how you fit into where/who you are. I am not from a second generation (My mom and dad were born and raised in the United States), but my wife’s mother grew up in Mexicali, Mexico. I get to sit on the sidelines and watch some of these second generation happenings first hand.
This movie is definitely worth a watch. If you have Netflix or Blockbuster, put it in your queue. The Namesake will give you a glimpse into another life that most of us are not used to. I’d love to hear also from people who are from second generation families and what they thought.
PS – If you haven’t seen August Rush, keep it that way. It was awful.

Do you like the TV show, How I Met Your Mother? You Should. Mainly because it is hilarious, but also because Doogie Howser’s, Neil Patrick Harris is in it – and he’s hilarious. If you have never seen the show, put it in your Netflix or BlockBuster. One disc, that’s all I ask, then you decide.
One of the main reasons I love about the show is that it comes up with all of these little catch phrases that can be applied to any situation. Here is a YouTube video of one of my favorites: Slap Bet. It’s legen…wait for it, wait for it. I hope you’re not lactose intolerant, ’cause the last part is dary. that’s right legendary.

he gave us “damn dirty apes”, Moses as a white guy, and most importantly Ben-Hur. Thank you, Mr Heston. RIP

I went to see Be Kind Rewind with my wife Cynthia this weekend. I never give reviews, but this movie was very moving. I won’t go too into the movie and spoil it in case you want to see it, but here is a quick glimpse:
Be Kind Rewind is a movie starring both Mos Def and Jack Black about a video clerk (Mos) who has his entire collection of videos in the store erased because Jack Black is magnetized and unknowingly touches all tapes. When asked about renting the movie Ghostbusters, Mos and Black must re-record the movie only to find that the renter liked their version and ask for more. They continue to record movies, but the catch is that all of the movies are only 20 minutes long. Eventually the community who loves these movies become involved in the story and these movies begin to bring them together.
Overall, I thought that it was a great movie. My reflections while leaving the movie were these.
1. It doesn’t take two hours to tell a good story. You can tell a great story in less than 20 minutes or less.
2. Everybody has a great story to tell and something to add to the story already in progress. When bringing the community together, you get different parts of the story which makes it into an even bigger part of the story.
3. The old ways (VHS) can work just as good as the new ways (DVD/Digital). In fact, by combining the old and the new together, they can work together and create something even bigger and more beautiful.
4. Rallying around a common cause can bring together a community instead of divide them.
Overall, great movie. I heart Mos Def and Jack Black wasn’t over the top in this movie. I guess community development and the idea of story is something I think about a lot also. I hope that you can see this movie if these are things that you think about also.

Here is the newest trailer for the next Indiana Jones movie. I can’t wait!!!

This brought me to a whole new level in my day! Enjoy…
